How to Have a Successful Online Counseling Session

  • Test the technology ahead of time. Make sure your internet connection is strong. Test your microphone and web camera. Try to do this at least 5 minutes prior to the start of our session.

  • Pick the right environment. Ideally, the place where you do your therapy session will be quiet and without distractions. Try to find a place that is quiet and well-lit so I can see and hear you.

  • Embrace the weird. Online counseling may feel weird or uncomfortable if you’ve never done it before. I invite you to embrace the uncomfortable feelings. The more you do it, the more natural it will feel.

  • Keep pen and paper close by. I may have you write something down during your session, so you want to be prepared with a way to do so.

  • Avoid scheduling meetings or other important obligations immediately after your therapy session. Usually, when people come to in-person therapy, they have a transition period from their session to the next thing in their day. With teletherapy, this transition isn’t always built in. Give yourself at least 5-10 minutes before your next big meeting or obligation, to allow time to decompress from the session.
