Does this sound like you?

You’re constantly trying to keep up with the demands of work, school, friendships, relationships, and your own self care.

You used to feel so successful at work and in your relationships, but now, it feels harder than ever to communicate what you need or to set boundaries that feel important to you. There’s a constant pressure to always be doing more, more, more, and if you don’t achieve your goals, you feel like crap, shame yourself, and guilt trip yourself like it was a second job.

This is how many of my clients feel when they start therapy with me—but it’s not how they feel once we’re doing the work, and it’s definitely not how they feel once they’re done with this phase in their journey.

When we start working together, my clients often feel stuck in their lives as they struggle with overwhelming workplace burnout, difficult poly relationship dynamics, and trying to overcome the constant pain of difficult life situations and past traumas. When we’re done, many of my clients say they feel lighter, less reactive to day-to-day stresses, and more easily able to handle things as they come.

If this sounds like you, therapy in Bloomington can help.

Hi, I’m Megan Kelly, a Bloomington therapist.

I work with anxious, burnt out adults who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, workplace stress, and relationship issues. I am deeply familiar with what it’s like to face the unique challenges of living in today’s world, especially as a highly-motivated yet anxious adult, and it’s my mission to help people like you overcome these challenges, so you can live an anxiety-free, fulfilling life.

As an EMDR therapist, a poly friendly therapist, and a burnout therapist, I am no stranger to the challenges of overcoming trauma, anxiety triggers, relationship struggles, as well as the constant stress of perfectionism and people-pleasing behaviors at home, at work, and in the community.

That’s what I’m here for: to support you in your healing journey. My main goal as a therapist in Bloomington is to effectively work myself out of a job. We’ll work on giving you powerful coping strategies for your daily life, while addressing the deeper issues that causing your anxiety and stress—such as trauma, poor boundary-setting, and more—so that eventually, you won’t need therapy anymore.

If you’re ready to start a new chapter of your life, contact me below for a free, no-obligation consultation. We’ll get to know each other and see if we’re a good fit for EMDR therapy, burnout therapy, or poly friendly therapy.

My approach to therapy

As someone who has experienced burnout, traumatic life events, and the stress of a polyamorous relationship, I recognize how difficult it can be to open up and talk about what’s really going on in your life.

Dealing with the constant pressure of being the “perfect” employee or the “perfect” partner makes it extra hard to just be you.

However, it’s my job (and my passion) to show up for you, listen deeply, get to know you for who you are, and validate your experiences in life, all while providing you with a space to learn, expand, grow and take the power back in your life.

During our sessions, it’s my main goal to create a space that is comfortable, collaborative, and relaxed, yet also gently challenging, where you’re encouraged to expand your growth edges and do the scary thing.

I do my best work with folks who are ready to dive right in and “get their hands dirty,” so to speak—even when it feels edgy, difficult, or scary—and who understand that change can take time, dedication, and repeatedly doing “unsexy” but vitally important maintenance work between therapy session.

This helps us create a strong rapport, which is the backbone of the therapeutic process. It also gives you the chance to be vulnerable in a world that makes it hard to show up as your true, unfiltered self.

With that being said, I also know and deeply understand that many people have been through difficult, traumatizing, or highly stressful circumstances that make it even more difficult to show up as their true selves. This is why I practice trauma-informed care, and why I’ve trained to be an EMDR therapist. This means that I have been trained to be especially aware of how trauma shows up in the mind and the body, and that I take very seriously your emotional and physical safety throughout the process of therapy.

Why I offer exclusively online therapy in Bloomington

In my experience, online therapy is perfect for busy schedules, which is something more and more of us are dealing with every day. Online therapy in Bloomington gives you the chance to work with a therapist who matches your needs without needing to worry about having to travel long distances to get to your appointment. With online therapy, committing to therapy is easier because the process itself is easier. If online EMDR therapy, burnout therapy, or poly friendly therapy sounds like it may be a good fit, schedule a consultation with me below.

Common Questions About Therapy

  • One of my specialities as a therapist in Bloomington is working with adults who are burnt out, usually from a stressful job, but also from care-giving roles, college, and life in general. I most frequently work with burnt out therapists, social workers, healthcare professionals, students, and educators.

In therapy for burnout, we’ll talk about all of the personal and professional factors contributing to your burnout—including the things you can control versus the things you can’t—and we’ll talk about ways to take back your time, energy, and happiness. This means looking at big and small changes you can make in your life, including adding coping skills to your toolbelt, setting boundaries, or maybe even processing past traumas with EMDR therapy, if they seem to be influencing how you show up at work, school, or in your relationships.

Ultimately, my goal is to help you get back to a place of feeling more empowered, in control, and excited about your life. Whether that means finding a new job, quitting school, or sticking with it and learning how to cope better, burnout therapy is a great way to put the power back in your hands to lead a more fulfilling, easeful life.

  • Poly friendly therapy is a type of therapy that is non-judging, not-pathologizing, and affirming of “alternative” relationship orientations, such as polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, swinging, relationship anarchy, polycules, hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships, and more.

As a poly friendly therapist in Bloomington, I provide poly affirming mental health services to individuals who want to learn coping skills, understand their triggers for anxiety and jealousy, and learn how to set compassionate boundaries with their partners. It’s also a place where we can address trauma triggers that may be impacting your relationships, so that you can have more fulfilling and deeply intimate relationships, no matter your relationship status or style.

  • EMDR is a powerful trauma therapy that helps your brain naturally heal from painful, traumatic, or highly stressful events in your life. While EMDR doesn’t “make it disappear,” it does help your brain feel more calm and safe, even when you think about—or are reminded of—painful things you’ve been through.

EMDR is not hypnosis, and it’s not a way to bring up “false memories.” EMDR is a highly researched and well-established form of therapy that can help people from all walks of life rediscover a sense of safety in their bodies and their minds.

EMDR involves several stages, and when we work together, we’ll spend a good amount of time in what we call “resourcing,” which is basically like building up a toolbox full of EMDR-specific coping skills. Once you feel ready to confront your painful memories, we’ll go into “reprocessing,” which is what most people think of when they think of EMDR.

And, to answer the question about online EMDR therapy—YES! EMDR can be done virtually. Instead of me moving my fingers back and forth in front of your eyes, you’ll have the chance to use strategic “self-administered” tapping, or we’ll use an audio-based version of the “back and forth” movement.

  • Every session is approximately 45-50 minutes long, and I typically see people weekly or every-other-week.

On average, clients who come to work with me in EMDR therapy, burnout therapy, or poly-friendly therapy are in services for 6 months to a year. Some people choose to end therapy sooner, and some stay longer. The amount of time you’re in therapy will depend on your goals, the severity of your issues or concerns, your financial capacity, the amount of time you have for therapy each week, and how much work you do between sessions to apply your new skills to your day-to-day life.

  • Good news for you—you’ve already taken a huge step toward finding a therapist, which is doing some research and trying to find the right therapist for you!
